Cabin fever

We got back from the cabin last night at about 6:30. Everyone left early and we headed into Leavenworth to walk around for a while. We went into a Danish bakery and had a kringle, an extra large pretzel and a strawberry danish. The girls tried on hats in the hat shop, which was fun too. They have some pretty cool stuff in that shop, including a Hogwarts tie, Harry Potter scarf, and Hogwarts hat (for all you Harry Potter fans).

This weekends was really fun. The weather could not have been more perfect. We ate, played games, went to Smallwoods (our family favorite), had yummy cupcakes to celebrate Miss Molly's 7th birthday, went to the river where we threw rocks, and some of the adults played wiffleball.

Can't wait to do it again, although we were extremely tired last night.

We're out

In just about an hour we are out of here to go to the cabin for the weekend with our friends. We are celebrating Molly's birthday!

If it were my birthday I would wish for one of these ( I have always thought they were way cool looking :), but probably a lot of work to have) .
With that I am logging off.

it's been "sew" long

I completely forgot about blog world! It started the night I went to Rose's house to sew. I got all excited about finishing up my Amy Butler Barcelona layered skirt ( you can view the pattern here) , then we had the crazy psycho NON-SPRING weather happen and my body got tricked in to thinking it was winter. After that happened, I felt like I immediately wanted to dive into the next sewing project, a super cute "apron overlay" which can also be seen at the above link.

My cat Smokey loves that the sewing machine is out. Mark says she just loves laying on the table by the window, but I know she secretly wants to sew with me. She better watch out, or I might "accidently" run the machine real fast and scare a couple more lives out of her.

I love old fashioned things

We just got back today from visiting my grandparents over in Moses Lake.

Not everyone knows this, but my grandma and her twin sister are sewers to the bone. They used to own a fabric store many years ago, and they sew on a weekly basis for their church, family, etc. My grandma has an extensive supply of fabrics and all things sewing. Sewing will be her legacy according to her! I was so surprised this weekend when she chose to pass some of her "goodies" on to me and my girls. My grandma is not selfish with her things, she just has never given her sewing items away. She said how happy she is that I am taking up this hobby (my mom hates sewing) and that is why she wanted to give me some of her things.

She gave me enough ric-rack to last a lifetime as well as many other items. Here are a few pictures.

this one is dedicated to all my fellow Seinfeld fans

Hayley has taken a huge liking to soup these days. I must also add that all pickiness on her part has gone out the door where soup is concerned. She loves to help out in the kitchen, and I really need to let her help cook more because she loves it so much. Her and I are reading a book together right now called "Granny Torrelli makes soup". Do you see a soup theme here? Today I bought her this hardback really beautiful soup recipe book for only $5. It has some of the regulars like minestrone, split pea and ham, etc. But it also has some unusual soups like cold cucumber with smoked salmon. Guess which one my little "soup nazi" wants to try first? You guessed it...the cold cucumber/salmon one. I am glad she wants to try new things, and I will surely not criticize the cook, for I want more of her soups!

Nancy Drew Rocks!

Friday night I started not feeling well ( a little cough, and just generally achy) . Saturday I had a mild version of stomach flu, and pretty much slept the whole weekend until about 1 or so today. It felt like such a wasted weekend. So tonite we went out to dinner, and then the girls and I watched the Nancy Drew movie on demand. It was so great! Nancy Drew books were the first books I can remember reading, and thus sparked my lifelong love of reading. I was in the 2nd grade when I first read "Secret of Shadow Ranch". Another girl had checked it out from our school library and as soon as she returned it I grabbed it up. The rest is history.
P.S. If you love Nancy Drew you will love this that was a gift from my girls and Mark last Christmas. It is every aspiring super sleuths dream to have a peek into Nancy Drews diary/scrapbook.

a little patience

After yesterdays online class, I thought a lot about having more patience and spending more quality time with my kids. I struggle with this a lot, because I feel like there is always so much to do around home, and so many things to get done at work, etc. I find myself tired and snapping at them when I should just take a deep breath!
My biggest challenge in life is to let the small stuff go, or "don't sweat the small stuff".
This has been very, very hard but I feel as the weeks and months go on this has become easier. Part of A New Earth (the book and online class I mentioned in yesterdays post) that I have already learned is about knowing that you can only control yourself and not what others do. I think I am a little bit of a control freak and I come by it naturally. When I think about mornings around our house I get tense and this is because the girls are so difficult and lots of tantrums occur. I usually react to this but now have a different approach that I hope will work, and become "routine" for me. And who knows it just may be a much smoother time in the mornings for us around here. Today actually went really well and I can say that I did not have one fit from either child. I almost want to pinch myself! When I felt a conflict come up this morning, instead of correcting the girls or trying to change their behavior, I took the class suggestion from yesterday and imagined the kids negative words passing through me instead of staying with me and making me mad. This may sound a little strange, but it really worked. And the best thing is that it was a very simple thing to do, with a much better outcome than in days past. I know it will take some time to become a thing that I don't have to consciously think about, but it will be worth the work if we can have much better time together with the kids.
And with that I am out! And now I can't get the Guns n Roses song out of my head "...a little patience...ya ya."
